No matter the product being distributed and shipped, the warehouse needs a manager. Warehouse managers are required to have experience in the industry before being considered for a management position, but he or she also needs to have a background in inventory management and supervising. Typical warehouse manager jobs involve overseeing inventory through shipping and receiving, standard supervisory duties, and, in some cases, overseeing transportation. Warehouse managers involved in logistics, however, will need additional experience and qualifications.

Warehouse managers are responsible for shipping and receiving and oversee loading operations. In all instances, he or she records data for the materials or supplies received and shipped. A warehouse also needs to meet various safety and sanitation requirements, and the warehouse manager enforces these standards.

Aside from standard warehouse duties, the manager needs to build up a staff, and he or she recruits, interviews, trains, and retains members of the team. As warehouses may have a high turnover rate, the warehouse manager may find that recruiting and retaining staff is a continual process. The manager is also responsible for the budget and communications for the warehouse, and, aside from communicating expectations to workers and maintaining the overall environment, he or she also communicates with customers.

Warehouse manager jobs may involve more than overseeing employees and inventory, however. The manager of a small to medium-sized distribution and shipping facility may often need to be responsible for transportation and logistics, as well. When transportation is involved, the warehouse manager is responsible for observing the routes for all workers and may observe them on routes and is also responsible for keeping files on drivers. He or she will see that all drivers meet DOT regulations and will do Vehicle Condition Reports.

Education isn’t a primary requirement for warehouse manager jobs, although a high school diploma is necessary; an associate’s degree is preferred. Industry experience is more important, particularly inventory management. When warehouse manager jobs require transportation experience, the manager should have a background in logistics, including Commercial Vehicle Driving and having a CDL. The warehouse manager should know hazardous materials, DOT, OSHA, and EPA regulations and have routing and rerouting skills.
