Nearly any company that uses trucks to transport goods from one location to another has a logistics department and needs a transportation manager to oversee its operations.

A transportation manager, on the surface, shares many of the same duties as the project managers of the corporate world. Mainly, their jobs consist of making large systems run smoothly and efficiently and meeting budget and scheduling goals. Transportation managers essentially have these same duties but are responsible for monitoring a system of drivers.

Having knowledge of transportation and its standards are, of course, requirements for any transportation manager positions. Someone in this position is responsible for seeing that the company and its drivers are compliant with DOT requirements and federal, state, and local laws, regulations, statutes, and ordinances. He or she will issue inspections and compliance audits for the transportation system and its drivers and see that they’re both completed.

Interacting with the drivers is a significant portion of the duties of a transportation manager. He or she manages and executes their training and monitors and evaluates their safety and performance. Many of the project management skills are needed in this portion of the job, as the transportation manager needs to recruit new staff, supervise the drivers, and analyze their performance and efficiency. He or she will also see that budget and expense goals are being met and will be in change or documentation and record keeping.

The skills and experience needed for transportation manager jobs varies, but a candidate should have at least a high school diploma. A bachelor’s degree, however, is preferred and should be in business, engineering, or logistics. Aside from an educational background, any candidate applying to such a position needs to have strong leadership and supervisory skills and have experience is analysis, problem solving, negotiation, and other common project management skills. Knowing Microsoft Office is required for such positions, as well.
