Logistics is an extensive operation, and a supply management team keeps it running as smooth as possible and on budget. No one supply manager position exists; instead, several are needed to monitor delivery, negotiate with vendors, and establish and maintain supply chain processes. A supply chain director, business specialist, logistics chain coordinator, planner, analyst, quality manager, and project manager are just some of the roles in a supply management team.

All of these positions are involved in improving and establishing supply chain processes and internal and external supplier logistics functions, and ensuring on-time delivery at the lowest possible cost. Typical job duties in supply chain management include supervising a team; reporting and communication for ERP system input and output; creating strategies for delivery, cost, and quality; working with other teams in a logistics facility or operation; negotiating with vendors; and monitoring vendor performance.

The experience and education for supply chain management positions varies. Although a degree is needed in most cases, an upper-level management role, such as a Supply Chain Director, requires a Bachelor of Arts or Science in Engineering or Operations Management, in addition to several years of management experience. He or she must also have an advanced understanding of global logistics ideas and practices, solid communication and negotiation skills, and familiarity with the latest technology.

Technology plays a large part in all supply chain management position. For a warehouse or logistics facility, knowledge of UPC/GTINs, GS/UCC128 Labeling, and VICS Bills of Lading is necessary. Computer skills are also required. In addition to Microsoft Office knowledge, experience with Visio, AutoCAD, and a warehouse management system (WMS) is desired. Similarly, experience with various electronic interfacing methods is also helpful.
