An MBA is also preferred and, for many senior positions, a requirement. Additionally, fixed asset experience also gives a candidate an edge.

Getting into a senior accountant position requires several years of experience, not to mention a record of success. Typically, this is at least five years on the job, if not more. Excellent accounting skills and achievements are a prerequisite to any senior accountant position, and leadership and team experience are also helpful.

In addition to education and experience on the job, knowledge of some computer software programs is necessary. For an accountant, Excel and ERP software are two programs everyone should know.
