This group of skills is needed for nearly all jobs in retail management. Additional assets include thorough Microsoft Office knowledge and problem-solving skills. Many of these skills can be acquired on the job, however, particularly if an individual works him or herself into a position of assistant manager or department manager. From here, the path to retail management is practically inevitable.

Retail environments vary nearly as much those for offices, however. Someone who manages a small retail establishment, such as a small mom-and-pop store, may not have the same skills and experience to manage a team over at a big box retailer.
