Can you think of a field that does not need program management? In an advanced project management role, program managers oversee all operations of a business. Transportation, healthcare, academics, information technology, and engineering are prominent fields for program management jobs, but because positions are in several disparate areas, job qualifications vary for each opening.

On a basic level, a program manager is responsible for scheduling, the scope, and the cost of production and projects and oversees and tracks all activities. He or she vacillates from interacting with internal to outside parties. He or she develops programs, provides overall management, and works with other parties to complete a program or project. Overall, a program manager manages design and development, analyzes, coordinates assessments, provides quality assurance, and prepares documentation.

Although these skills are general, overseeing and coordination are needed in all fields. In transportation, for example, a program manager collaborates with suppliers and customers, oversees and manages team activities, and aims for successful commercialization of all programs. In academics, on the other hand, a program manager is involved in coordinating and monitoring academic programs and projects. He or she manages the design and development of these programs to completion.

All program management jobs, however, require at least a bachelor’s degree. In many instances, an MBA is necessary. In addition to the degree, an individual needs to have experience in project management, business, or supply chain management. Experience and education are not the only qualifications for these positions, and depending upon the field, applicants may need Six Sigma or PMP certification.
