Manager training jobs can be found in finance, engineering, operations, sales, food service, or retail, and an applicant needs some experience in the industry already. In an apprenticeship role, a manager in training works with and assists a senior manager. He or she may supervise operations and employees and help with facilities management. At the same time, however, the trainee is picking up skills from the senior manager: customer relations, management, bringing in new clients, and maintaining inside and outside relationships.

Most manager in training jobs require a few years of experience – between one and three typically. Some, such as restaurant or retail manager trainee positions, accept applicants directly out of school or function as an internship. In all cases, however, the manager in training needs at least an associate’s degree; a bachelor’s is preferred. In certain fields, additional qualifications may be required. In finance, for example, a candidate for a management training program should already be certified in Series 7 and 66.

Training programs may accept candidates with a degree only and minimal or no work experience. A good academic record, however, is required for training programs, and an interview is part of the application process.

Aside from education and industry experience, having general people skills is a requirement for manager in training jobs. More specifically, a candidate must have solid organizational, communications, interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
