Primarily positions in the oil and gas field, land management jobs involve knowledge of state laws for natural resources, attracting outside parties, and managing contracts. The Bureau of Land Management is the most prominent employer in this field, but Bureau of Land Management jobs go beyond oil and gas and include energy, fire, grazing, planning, recreation, and landscape and species conservation.

In the oil and gas field, a land manager obtains the rights for his or her employer to drill and produce hydrocarbons, determines mineral and surface ownership, and establishes relationships with other companies for development and exploration. For all of these instances, a land manager must know state laws for oil and gas.

On the job, a land manager researches acreage positions and contracts to assist with attracting outside businesses and prepares applications for hearings. For the latter, he or she acts as a coordinator and testifies at hearings. Land management jobs range from entry-level to advanced roles. Typically, however, 10 years of experience is needed for senior positions. A professional applying to a high-level land manager job needs to be familiar with EP operations, Midstream, marketing, systems, joint ventures, accounting, and treasury. Experience with EP property sales and acquisitions or project management is also helpful. In general, communication and interpersonal skills are necessary for any land management job.

Most land management jobs simply require a bachelor’s degree, although an MBA is helpful. Degrees in PLM, energy management, or business relate to many of the skills needed for land manager positions.
