If a company has a union or labor relations team, a manager with extensive experience in the field and in a negotiations setting is needed. A labor relations team typically consists of a director, president, manager, and human resources, and a manager reports to the director. In general, labor relations manager jobs involve providing advice or negotiating on business issues, coordinating labor practices with management, and handling contracts and disputes. A labor relations manager may also oversee a local office.

In resolving labor-related issues, a labor relations manager prepares negotiations, contracts, counterproposals, and agreements. He or she advises and works with management in such labor contracts, disputes, grievances, or strikes and advises management on the union’s course of action.

As a part of enforcing procedures, a labor relations manager watches labor trends and gives recommendations about changing policies or procedures to a company. As a leader of a group of unionized workers, he or she oversees employment, recordkeeping, benefits, wage schedules, communications, and recognition programs.

Unions may operate on local and national scales, and local labor relations managers often work and communicate with federal or state labor representatives. Depending upon the issue or conflict, he or she may also work with mediators or outside labor council.

A bachelor’s degree in business or labor relations is required for most labor relations manager jobs; however, a JD is preferred. In addition to education, an applicant needs seven to 10 years of experience in labor relations. More specifically, he or she should have worked as a first chair negotiator, produced reports on labor issues, and thoroughly know all federal and state labor laws. Labor relations managers come face to face with management and employees on a daily bases, and because of this, a track record of objectivity, interpersonal skills, and sensitivity is also necessary for the position.
