Knowledge management is not a clearly-explained concept, although many companies and organizations benefit from having a knowledge management professional on their team. The specialist needs to identify techniques used to reach such goals, and provides guidance to managers, supervisors, and employees in achieving these. As knowledge management specialist jobs usually involve technology, the specialist may work with the information technology department. Additionally, he or she needs to be familiar with the field of the company.

A knowledge management professional needs at least a Bachelor’s degree, preferably a Bachelor of Science. If the field requires specific skill knowledge and abilities, however, he or she may need a Master’s degree in that subject area. Having knowledge management certification is also helpful to secure a position. In addition to education, several years of experience – at least five – on the job are required.

Aside from education and work experience, a knowledge management specialist, analyst, or director must have process improvement, documentation, and management concepts experience, and interpersonal skills are necessary. As he or she will be involved in some degree with information technology, knowledge of MS SharePoint Portal Services and other computer software is a general requirement.
