Search engine job websites draw their listings from multiple employment boards. These range from standard job websites to industry-related boards to local job listings. Some even pull open positions directly from an employer’s website.

In fact, search engine-style job websites are far friendlier in a job search. Instead of being forced to apply through the job site, job seekers are directed to the employer’s website in many cases – or at least a listing with the employer’s email address or application – and can apply from there. The chances of having success with your application are greater.

Of course, no matter the expansiveness of many job search websites, the job seeker needs to be prepared for the market. First thing, his or her resume needs to be fully up-to-date with job titles, salaries, and accomplishments. If any accolades were awarded on the job, be sure to include these, as well, particularly as hiring managers like seeing achievements over day-to-day skills.

Additionally, make sure the format of your resume is readable and up-to-date. Not applying through job search websites means your resume will have a clearer form and won’t be mangled by a plain text format; however, the visual presentation should still be easy on the eyes, with few bullet points and fonts. Leaving out the objective is common at the moment and, instead, job seekers are advised to come up with a description of their skills and experience in four sentences to open the resume.
