Positions in these medical institutions range from administrative assistants and transcriptionists to department heads and chief executive officers.

The career path for jobs in health care management is equally rewarding to education advancements as it is to experience. Often, someone starting on such a career path begins in finance, government relations, human resources, information systems, marketing, medical staff relations, patient care services, or a similar administrative field. In many cases, an individual is responsible for patient medical records, billing, insurance, and running the office as smoothly as possible.

Education for any of these entry- to mid-level positions is basic. Knowledge of medical terminology and office and computer skills is the foundation for nearly all health care management jobs. Advanced positions may need a bachelor’s or master’s degree, although extensive experience may make up for the lack of degrees. Nevertheless, those in health care management jobs often start off as a health or medical interpreter, medical services manager, medical biller and coder, medical records and health information technician, medical secretary, or medical transcriptionist.

While many of these entry- to mid-level positions are the first stepping stone to greater possibilities, more skills or education are needed to move from a clerical or administrative roll into management. Generally, most jobs requirement a degree in health administration from an accredited institution; extensive experience may be helpful in lieu of a degree. Communication, leadership, and team work supplement advanced education or work experience.
