Almost every field, industry, and company needs a general manager, an individual who is in charge of an entire organization, oversees all employees and observes all actions, and is always looking to take the workplace in a new direction. This individual, no matter if the field is retail or hotel management, is always at the top of the company; he or she, however, may not be the president or head, and those in district management or higher positions will have more authority. Nevertheless, when considering a company or organization as a singular entity, the general manager is responsible for the entire immediate workplace.

General manager jobs target three areas of skills: leadership, extreme competency in the industry, and business intuition. The latter out of these three is either learned in school or on the job. An MBA degree program, for example, focuses on the accounting, management, and marketing skills that anyone in the business world should have to succeed. These skills may be learned on the job but, when a candidate is considered for a position, having such a degree is just as helpful in the workplace.

Prowess and success in the industry, however, simply come with experience. An individual just out of school, for example, shouldn’t expect to land a general manager position right away. Even if such an individual has internship experience, he or she hasn’t been in the field long enough to be considered a credible professional. In many cases, someone out of school will start in an entry or mid-level position and, after a few years, work up into management. General manager jobs often specify that an individual applying should have at least five to 10 years of experience in the field.

Aside from these two qualities, leadership is an asset – and a necessity – to anyone aspiring to a management position. For students, leadership is embodied by joining on-campus groups and organizations and becoming the head – or at least a notable member, such as a treasurer, of said organization. In the workplace, however, having this visibility isn’t as easy, and the competition to seem assertive to superiors is greater. Everyone enters on the same level, but those who can lead a team from the start and have success are often considered for management roles in the future.

These three qualities will often help a worker ascend into management, but each field differs. Hotel general manager jobs, for example, might give a candidate a better chance at advancement if he or she has a hospitality management degree. Similarly, those in construction may have a greater chance at becoming a project manager by earning an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in engineering. Additionally, general manager trainee jobs may take a candidate just out of business school and prepare him or her for a general management position in retail, marketing, or other office environment.
