An MBA is standard, although specific programs, such as an MBA in Organizational Management or International Business, focus on a concentrated and advanced skill set. Even with a higher degree, however, an individual starts at a company in an entry- or mid-level role, such as in accounting, sales, or marketing, and gradually advances in the company or in the general field.

Although business savvy is needed by all companies, executive-level jobs may warrant more industry-specific skills. In certain fields such as hotel or restaurant management, experience in the industry and specific education, such as a hospitality or culinary school degree, is an asset, and allows the management team at the top to fully understand what’s going on in the lower ranks. A sterile, business-only perspective often minimizes the industry-specific skills and knowledge for the sake of sales or saving money.

Another approach to an executive role is starting a business yourself. Such start-ups may take time to get off the ground and see success and a profit, but at the same time, you’re managing an entire company. If you haven’t ever held a managerial position, being in charge of an entire team and organization is a daunting task. Having business and managerial experience is an asset to an executive role within a startup company.
