Most jobs at the top are considered director or management level positions. This may include any manager – from an administrative or human resources manager to someone managing an entire company – or director of a company or organization. He or she may oversee part of a company, such as an administrative staff, or be a team leader for an entire business. But, how does someone get into this line of work?

Getting to the top of the corporate food chain isn’t always about skills. An individual should be knowledgeable and have nearly expert-level competence, but leadership, teambuilding, and organizational skills are qualities that are nearly as important. Some may have a natural knack for teambuilding and leading, but not everyone does. Director or management level positions aren’t simply a job that an individual enters directly out of school. Nearly everyone begins in an entry- to mid-level position, depending upon education and skill level, and works up. Some decide to become specialists in their fields, such as a senior IT consultant, while others aim for leadership.

Gaining leadership skills isn’t simply knowing that you can direct an organization. Showing your team that you can lead them in the right direction displays your ability. Over time, the ability to be a team leader – but also a team player – will be noticed and translate into a director or management level position.

Aside from being a good leader, having education helps. A bachelor’s degree isn’t always enough, particularly in the corporate world, and earning a higher degree, such as an MBA, will give you an edge over other candidates. An MBA program focuses on classes in business communication, analysis, financial management, accounting, and marketing. Showing that you have the motivation to earn an advanced degree and also the knowledge from such a degree will make you look like a stronger candidate.

Of course, showing that you’re a strong leader and have the education and skills to back it up aren’t always enough. Anyone in management should be an expert at networking, as you’ll need to continue building relationships in the higher position. Building relationships may land you a better position, and continuing the same behavior on the job will increase your business.
