Preferably, he or she has experience working on local boards and committees with commissions and has been doing so for nearly 10 years or more. As far as background is concerned, someone applying to be city manager should have a master’s degree in organizational and business management or a master’s of management in public administration.

Large and small municipalities have city manager positions. Larger cities may even have assistant city manager jobs. In a small to medium-sized city, the salary for such a position is about $145,000. The amount will be more for a larger or metropolitan city.
