The path to an upper-level or top management position starts at the assistant level. No matter if you work in retail, an office environment, a hotel, or construction company, the assistant manager does many of the same skills as the manager and, at the same time, learns from his or her superior. Although not a mid-level position by any means, those who advance to assistant manager jobs have just started on the first step of a path to upper-level management.

Skills and leadership abilities are two qualities needed for many assistant manager jobs. Presumably, an individual is somewhat established in his or her field not only by experience and time but also by knowledge. In a retail setting, for example, someone might ascend from a clerk or supervisor to assistant manager by showing leadership ability on the job, knowledge of the field, and quickness. Many of these same qualities are needed by those in office, sales, property, or hotel assistant manager jobs.

When it comes to on-the-job skills, the assistant manager in all environments helps with hiring, training, and managing employees. Some interviews, especially at a larger company, may involve a candidate being interviewed by both the assistant and general manager. If that candidate is hired, the assistant manager most likely will be responsible for training and observing the new employee. He or she, however, may not be involved in budget decisions, although he or she will assist the general manager with budget preparation and any other financial requirements on the job.

Education may play a part for someone looking to become an assistant manager. For retail assistant manager jobs, on-the-job experience may be held in higher worth, although an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in business gives the candidate an advantage. In an office setting, a degree will have more worth, and a candidate will often have a leg up by earning an MBA. In certain positions, such as sales or IT, the skills and knowledge, including success for salespeople, will also play a part in assistant management potential.

Aside from skills and education, the third quality needed for anyone aspiring to an assistant management position is leadership ability. While competency and authority in the field will show over time, a new hire can start displaying leadership abilities from day one. In team environments, for example, one can display their assertiveness and direction of a team toward certain goals, and, over time, superiors will notice this and see that this entry- or mid-level worker has management potential.
