In a national chain, the area manager, or a district manager, is the next step up from overseeing an individual branch or store. Typically, area manager jobs require an individual to keep track of several stores or offices in a region. Much like any management position, area manager jobs involve budget planning, staffing, and overseeing branch employees.

In any industry, area managers address and observe their regional markets and base all sales and business plans on these conditions. He or she develops and implements these sales and business plans across all branches and sees that each executes these strategies to draw in more business.

Area managers have an administrative role on a larger scale. He or she oversees all branch managers in a particular region and makes sure each location is properly staffed. Enforcing state and federal laws is also part of the position. An area manager is responsible for seeing that OSHA, DOT, or any similar federal or state regulations are in place in each location.

As the head of the region, an area manager is responsible for finances and customer relations. He or she brings in new clients to a region and maintains these relationships and puts together budgets. On a company scale, he or she may speak with other area managers to coordinate strategies, budgets, or other plans.

Area manager jobs require several years of experience – at least five or more. He or she should have been in a supervisory role for part of this time; preferably, he or she is already a branch manager moving up into a higher role. On the job, applicants for area manager positions should have acquired customer service, budget planning, communications, sales, interpersonal, leadership, coaching, and computer skills. Additionally, a bachelor’s degree is necessary for nearly all area manager jobs.
